NCC Junior Checkmate Chess Tournament 2025 Concludes Successfully

Kathmandu . The NCC Junior Checkmate Chess Tournament 2025 wrapped up successfully after two days of intense strategic battles among young chess players from across the Kathmandu Valley.

Organized by the NCC Education & Sports Committee in collaboration with Himalayan Chess Academy and MICE Events, the tournament witnessed 101 participants from 24 schools, showcasing their critical thinking, problem-solving skills, and passion for chess.

The competition was divided into two categories: Grade 3-5 and Grade 6-8, for both boys and girls, ensuring a fair and competitive environment for the young players.

In the Grade 3-5 Girls category, Glossy Shrestha from Future Star Academy secured the championship title, while Suvani Rana from Siddhartha Vanasthali Institute and Tistina Basnet from Annapurna Secondary School claimed second and third place, respectively.

In the Grade 3-5 Boys category, Yunish Khadka from Annapurna Secondary School emerged as the winner, with Sambhav Thulung from Sanskriti International School finishing second and Sulav Panthi from Green Land School securing third.

Among the Grade 6-8 Girls, Nihana Shrestha from Marvellous English Boarding School took the top spot, followed by Ojashwi Shrestha from Annapurna Secondary School in second and Jenisha Neupane from Divine School in third. In the Grade 6-8 Boys category, Saatiwik Man Tuladhar from Nisarga Batika School was crowned champion, while Aayan Joshy from Nisarga Batika School and Dipan Mainali from Asian Public School finished in second and third place, respectively.

The tournament was played in swiss system and under FIDE laws of chess with 6 rounds in boys and 4 rounds in girls section. The 3 points for win, 1 for draw , 0 for loss or (3-1-0) point system was used.

The tournament concluded with a grand award ceremony where Mr. Kamlesh Agrawal, President of the Nepal Chamber of Commerce, and Mr. Rupak Rajbanshi, Chairperson of the NCC Education & Sports Committee, felicitated the top 10 players from each category, recognizing their dedication and skill.

A total of 40 young champions were honored, reflecting the growing popularity of chess among students. Based on the overall rankings and performance, Annapurna Secondary School was declared the Best School, followed by Siddhartha Vanasthali Institute in second place and Nisarga Batika School in third.

The tournament’s success highlights NCC’s ongoing commitment to promoting intellectual sports and youth development.

Chess, often regarded as a game of intellect and strategy, continues to gain momentum among young students in Nepal, fostering critical thinking and decision-making abilities from an early age.
