Lalitpur. Minister for Labor, Employment and Social Security Sharad Singh Bhandari has expressed concern that there is a shortage of skilled manpower despite the possibility of employment in the country. Speaking at a review and experience exchange program of the ‘State of Work’ project run by Swiss Contact with the aim of promoting employment and organizing the labor market in Nepal, he said that four lakh unskilled workers are forced to go abroad due to lack of skills and competencies as per the needs of employers.
Minister Bhandari said that the government will focus on making the system of connecting employers and job seekers timely and technology-friendly. “Now we will create a medium to connect with various national and international employers, the government will facilitate all these things,” he said.
Minister Bhandari expressed her commitment to manage the employment system in a way that increases easy access to services for the general public, saying that the government’s goal is to maintain good governance through technology-based service delivery. She emphasized that every municipality should create employment opportunities by creating employment assistant posts. Biratnagar Metropolitan City Mayor Nagesh Koirala said that Swiss Contact has played an important role in connecting youth and women with entrepreneurship and employment, and that it has had a positive impact on the community.
He said, “The organization has helped connect youth and women with employment and entrepreneurship.” The government has been shocked by the necessary facilitation for the success of the training we have provided for the promotion of entrepreneurship. 23 percent of the youth in Koshi Province are still unemployed, we have to make more efforts to create jobs for them. We will also need the support of the locals in this.’
Mayor Koirala also emphasized the need to link the Shram Sansar portal with government agencies. Dunduraj Ghimire, National Program Director of the Prime Minister’s Employment Program, informed that this project, which has been implemented in various municipalities in Koshi Province, has had a significant impact. He said that the federal and provincial governments have provided project support to make citizens socially conscious and self-reliant.
Ved Narayan Gachhadar, Mayor of Duhabi Municipality, said that the results and learnings of the project will have a long-term impact in linking them with employment and entrepreneurship. He expressed the view that it has helped connect youth with every program related to entrepreneurship.
Sanjay Dhwaj Karki, Country Director of Swiss Contact, informed that financial and technical assistance has been received from the Hapel Foundation and Swiss Development Cooperation (SDC) in the implementation of the ‘Step-Up Project’, which was run in Nepal from February 2021 to March 2025. He said that the project, which started in three local levels of Koshi Province, has facilitated entrepreneurship training and employment for housewives over a period of four years.
