Agency. An estimated 6,114,728 vehicles, including private cars and two-wheelers, will be barred from fuel at petrol and diesel stations across Delhi amid a strict air pollution drive implemented in the Indian capital from Tuesday( July 1), a local transport department official said.
Delhi was one of the most polluted capital cities in the world. Especially during the winter months, air pollution reached an alarming level of 1,000 in terms of air quality index. Old vehicles operating on petrol and diesel are often considered major contributors to air pollution here.
Petrol vehicles older than 15 years and diesel vehicles older than 10 years will be barred from being refueled and will be seized by enforcement agencies immediately. Of these, more than four million vehicles were said to be two-wheelers.
Old vehicles or vehicles with special licenses and compressed natural gas will be exempted from fuel restrictions. Automated number plates installed at around 500 fuel stations across Delhi will be identified by identification cameras.
As part of a phased plan, a similar ban will be implemented in five high-density districts of Delhi including Gurugram, Faridabad, Ghaziabad, Gautam Buddh Nagar and Sonipat from November this year. According to the order, the remaining parts of the National Capital Region will come under the fuel ban from April next year.
