Kathmandu. Minister for Labor, Employment and Social Security, Sharat Singh Bhandari, has said that workers going for foreign employment are falling into the trap of meter-billing scammers. Addressing a function organized in Kathmandu on Tuesday on the occasion of the 7th Social Security Day, he said that as banks do not provide loans to workers going for foreign employment, they are falling into a ‘depth trap’.

He said that a serious situation has been created where workers who have gone for foreign employment are burdened with debt and have to return to the box, and the current government is working for this. He mentioned that although 500,000 workers enter Nepal’s labor market annually, only 100,000 workers can be employed.

He said that domestic employment is an alternative to foreign employment and that it should be made systematic and safe as long as there is a compulsion to go for foreign employment.

Bhandari said, ‘A situation has arisen where workers going for foreign employment are joining the fund only for labor approval. As a result, they have complained that the Social Security Fund has not been able to make the necessary contribution. Workers who have gone for foreign employment have fallen into two traps.’

‘Our workers have gone there to find employment, they have not gone there to fight. If they had gone to fight, they would have been defeated there. Why are the workers who went for foreign employment returning to the box? This is an ego question. It is the need of the year to solve it. The current government is working on how to solve these problems,’ he said.

He said that the government has adopted a policy of providing unsecured loans to workers going for foreign employment in the monetary policy.
