Kathmandu. Minister for Labor, Employment and Social Security, Sharat Singh Bhandari, has said that women’s rights have been taken away in foreign employment.
He said this while inaugurating the Fourth National Women’s Conference organized by the Women’s Committee of the Joint Trade Union Coordination Center (JTUCC) in Kathmandu on Sunday.
He said that despite talking about equal rights in employment, women’s rights have been taken away in foreign employment. He said that 50,000 Nepali women are in Kuwait and they do not have official status with the government.
Says that Nepal’s law does not allow them to go, but they should be serious about their arrival in Kuwait, and also informed that the government is planning to hold a national labor and employment conference on February 26 and 27.
He said, “We are talking about equal rights in employment. But now women’s rights in foreign employment have been taken away. There has been no talk of their employment. 50,000 women are in Kuwait. But there is no official status about where they are and what they are like. Nepal’s law has not allowed them to go. We say that we have prohibited them because there is no guarantee of security in the international forum. This is a matter of debate.” We are currently going to hold a National Labor and Employment Conference on the 26th and 27th of this month.’
Minister Bhandari said that it is necessary to make the Labor, Trade Union Act, Foreign Employment, Social Security Act and other laws relevant to the times. He said that the government is currently moving towards making them relevant to the times and said that it is time to make every sector relevant to the times.
He said that the alternative to foreign employment would be domestic employment. He said that the government is working to create employment within the country by exploring employment opportunities.
Says that the government is preparing to make the coming decade a decade of employment and employment, ‘It is time for us to reform every sector. We have the responsibility to make all the new laws and regulations to give fullness to the constitution. Based on that, we need to change the Labor, Trade Union Act, Foreign Employment, Social Security Act, all of them in line with the times, so we are open to the process of amending all the laws.’
Speaking at the program, JTUCC President Jagat Bahadur Simkhada said that it has been proven that women can run the state even as president if they get the opportunity.
He said that even now, the approach towards men and women in the workplace is slightly different. He said that some such tendencies still exist today due to the past state power and patriarchal system, character and tendencies.
He said, ‘Women have been able to run as Presidents when they get the opportunity. They have been able to become Chief Justices when they get it. They have been able to become Speakers of the House. We need to understand that. Even now, sometimes the way men and women are viewed in our workplaces is a bit different. It is important to understand that the reason for the past state power and patriarchal system, character and tendencies is the same.’
President Simkhada said that rights cannot be obtained by asking for them and that they should be fought for. He mentioned that if there had been no people’s war in Nepal, women would not have had this opportunity today. He said that there was a 33 percent issue in power as well, but 50 percent women’s participation should be everywhere.
