Sunsari. Jabbar Miyan of Bhokraha Narsingh Rural Municipality-2, Sunsari, has cultivated banana in a collective area of 14 bighas in Bhokraha and Bangulwa in Inruwa-8, Dumraha.
Despite the problems of labor, food, and seeds, he cultivated banana at a cost of about 50 lakhs. Miyan was confident that he would get good income from cash crop banana cultivation.
Like Miyan, Khurshid Ansari has cultivated banana in two bighas. He cultivated banana at a cost of 9 lakhs. He was also looking after the banana plantation with the belief that he would make a profit with his investment.
But they were disappointed when the windstorm a few days ago damaged the banana plantation. Although they were sure that the investment made in the banana plantation would yield a return, they informed that the windstorm accompanied by hailstorm caused great damage to the banana plantation.
Both of them are just examples for Sunsari. The Agricultural Knowledge Center Inruwa Sunsari has reported that most of the banana plantations of Sunsari farmers have been damaged due to the wind and hailstorm that occurred continuously for two days.
The windstorm on Sunday night and Monday evening caused major damage by uprooting banana plants planted in the fields. Local farmers have complained that the sudden strong winds have damaged their banana plantations, which they had taken loans from, and have caused damage worth millions of rupees.
Local farmers have said that the strong winds that have repeatedly hit the southern areas of Sunsari, including Inruwa, the district headquarters, have also damaged wheat and corn plantations.
Local farmer Jabbar Miya said that almost all the banana plants in the banana plantations in Inruwa, Gadhi Rural Municipality, Bhokraha Narsingh, Harinagar and Devnaganj areas have been damaged.
When bananas that were ready to be taken to the market after two months fell and were damaged, Hari Mehta, chairman of the Inruwa Banana Pocket Committee, said that the farmers have suffered financial losses.
In Inruwa alone, banana cultivation is taking place in an area of 100 bighas, but most of the bananas have been damaged by the storm, he said. About 10 million rupees worth of banana plantations have been damaged, Mehta said.
On the one hand, the damage to the bananas that are about to bloom, on the other hand, the farmers say that lakhs of rupees will have to be spent per bigha to remove the fallen plants and prepare the land for planting new bananas.
Farmer Shyam Kumar Yadav claimed that the storm has caused the biggest loss to the banana plantation so far. Nil Kamal Singh, head of the Agricultural Knowledge Center, informed that banana cultivation is being carried out on 520 hectares or 1,000 bighas in Sunsari annually.
