Windstorm causes damage of Rs. 5.1 million to banana crop, farmers worried

Baniyani. The windstorm accompanied by rain in Barhadashi Rural Municipality of Jhapa has caused damage worth lakhs to banana plantations.

On Sunday evening, the windstorm accompanied by rain completely destroyed the banana plantation planted by locals on 30 bighas in Battis Bighe in Barhadashi-7, causing damage worth around Rs 5.1 million, said Deputy Superintendent of Police Khagendra Bahadur Khadka, spokesperson of the District Police Office, Jhapa.

The windstorm has uprooted banana trees planted by 15 households in Barhadashi-7. Spokesperson Khadka said that a police team led by Deputy Inspector of Police Bal Bahadur Rai from the Area Police Office, Ghailadubba, conducted an on-site survey today and collected details of the damage, according to the spokesperson.

The wind and rain caused damage to the Kamaksha Industries Private Limited (Plywood Industry), a joint venture of Kapil Chhetri of Mechinagar-10 Dhulabari and others, located in Gainabari, Mechinagar Municipality-15, Jhapa. The wind and rain blew away the trusses on the west side of the peeling building, the zinc roof, and broke the CCTV camera, causing damage worth about Rs 220,000.

Similarly, the wind and rain caused damage to the Durga Kata Galla Bhandar (Fapar,) operated by 55-year-old Durga Prasai of Damak Municipality-8. 35 zinc sheets of the hall where rice and corn were stored were completely blown away, and the iron pipes on the roof were also damaged by bending. The 55-60 sacks of paper inside the store hall have been soaked with water, causing a damage worth about Rs 150,000.

Similarly, the three-roomed house of Sakaldeep Sah, 69, of Baltol, Haldibari Rural Municipality-4, Jhapa, made of bamboo with a tin roof, was completely damaged by the wind accompanied by the water, causing a damage worth about Rs 150,000.

The wind blew away the roof covering of the upper floor of the one-and-a-half-story concrete house of Kamala Adhikari, 38, of Sangam Chowk, Damak Municipality-4, causing a damage worth about Rs 30,000. The roof covering of two rooms on the upper floor of the concrete house of Bhim Prasad Sigdel, 52, of the same place, causing a damage worth about Rs 60,000.
