Agency. China said on Friday that its wind and solar power capacity had surpassed coal-fired thermal power for the first time.

‘In the first quarter of 2025, China’s newly installed wind and photovoltaic power capacity totaled 74.33 million kilowatts, bringing the cumulative installed capacity to 1.482 million kilowatts,’ China’s National Energy Administration said in a brief statement, without defining thermal power, ‘this has exceeded the installed capacity of 91.451 million kilowatts for the first time.’

China, the world’s largest emitter of greenhouse gases that drive climate change, has pledged to peak carbon emissions by 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality by 2060. .

China’s energy comes from about 60 percent coal, but the country is also a hub for renewable energy power, building nearly twice as much wind and solar capacity as all other countries combined, according to research published last year. Chinese President Xi Jinping said on Wednesday that the country’s efforts to combat climate change will not slow down “no matter how the international situation changes.”

Xi said he would announce a 2035 greenhouse gas reduction commitment, known as a nationally determined contribution (NDC), ahead of COP30 in November, and that it would cover all greenhouse gases, not just carbon dioxide.

This comes as US President Donald Trump withdrew the world’s second-biggest polluter, the United States, from the Paris climate agreement and pledged a massive expansion in fossil fuel consumption.
