In the Maithili Hindu tradition, Shrawan is considered the favorite month of Lord Shiva, which makes it special for the people of Mithila. In this month, it is an established custom for all the people of Mithila, whether single or married, to go to the market to wear green and yellow bangles. Even when going to the market to wear bangles, the people of the surrounding areas of Mithila go out with their daughters-in-law if they agree.

Mithila says that the month of Shrawan has been special for them to relax even for a moment from the hustle and bustle of the house on the pretext of bangles. This established tradition of Mithila makes the owners of the jewelry shops wait for the beginning of Shrawan. Jewelry shops are open during the wedding season, during special religious rituals, and during Shrawan. Ram Bhagat Sah, the owner of a jewelry shop in Sitapur Bazaar, Bhangaha-5, says that Shrawan is a month of anticipation for them as they have to do business for a few days in a few months.

“People flock to our shop only after Shrawan begins. It is also as busy as the first two weeks, and there is no pressure of customers until later,” says Sah. “Since today is the second Monday of Shrawan, the crowd has increased in the shop since morning.” It is a tradition for the people of Mithilani to wear green and yellow bangles when going to Shiva temples for darshan and worship on Shrawan Monday. When going out with close friends, Mithilani decides to go to the market, wear bangles and visit the Shiva temple two to four days in advance.

Although there is a demand for bangles in both green and yellow colors during Shaan, most people prefer green ones, says Sah. Therefore, jewelry shops including Sah say that various types of bangles are decorated in shops targeting Shaan. The month of Shaan and its Monday have special significance for Shiva devotion and worship. There is a Hindu Maithili belief that if you call upon Lord Shiva on Monday of Shaan, worship him and observe a fast, your wishes will be fulfilled.

On Monday of Shaan, Mithilani is seen at the Shiva temple dressed in various clothes and singing songs of Shiva devotion. Due to the special importance of green bangles in this Mithila attire, green and yellow bangles are now seen in the market everywhere in the Mithila region including Mahottari.

Since green bangles are considered a beauty accessory for unwavering good fortune, women choose them during the Sawan Monday fast. Preeti Mahato of Bardibas-2, who covers her wrists with green bangles, says that it is believed that worshipping Lord Shiva and fasting with green bangles will bring the desired boon and unwavering good fortune. This year, there are four Mondays in Sawan (Saura month). Today is the second Monday of this year. According to the lunar calendar, there are five Mondays in Shrawan, including the full moon day of Shrawan on Bhadra 3.

Shrawan is considered the best month for worshipping nature. Since green is considered a symbol of nature, the importance of this color increases in Shrawan, says Mithilani. “The month of Shrawan is considered special for worshipping nature, green is considered a symbol of nature,” says social activist Saraswati Chaudhary, a resident of Bardibas-3. “Most of our pilgrimages, fasts and festivals are related to nature, so green bangles have gained importance in Shrawan.”

Married Mithilani women observe fasts on Shrawan Mondays for unwavering good fortune and unmarried women pray for a handsome groom. Newlyweds from Mithilani believe that the love between husband and wife will deepen in Shrawan. Be it the worship of Lord Shiva or other religious occasions, green bangles are a priority for Mithilanis when choosing auspicious ornaments.

On the occasion of this festival, not only green bangles but also green pots, green sarees and other decorative ornaments are decorated everywhere in Shrawan. Mithilanis have also started the Madhusravani festival, which is celebrated for 13 days with the wish of eternal good fortune and deep love between husband and wife, from last Friday. When Monday of Shrawan and Madhushravani coincide, it has become a special occasion for the Mithilani to meet each other, laugh and dress up.

For farmers, Shrawan is a time of busy farming. At this time, the Mithilani are busy with traveling, laughing with friends and pilgrimage. The Mithilani, who always enjoy being at home, are seen laughing and laughing with a group of friends at the Shiva temple after the onset of Shrawan. Sulochana Sharma, a resident of Matihani-9, says that there is an inherent desire to make their clothes look special in such gatherings. On the occasion of Sawan Monday, the Shiva temples of Tuteshwor, Jaleshwor, Mangalnath, Siddhanath and Gupteshwor in Mahottari are filled with devotees in the morning.

The month of Sawan seems to have turned not only the fields and the Kanlapakha but also the surroundings green. Shops selling green cosmetics are now everywhere in the market. The presence of young people from Mithilani is seen in abundance in such cosmetics shops. According to Shyam Mahato, a businessman from Mukhya Chowk, Bardibas-1, customers have started coming to the shop since the beginning of Sawan.

A jewelry shop owner says that women are now looking for green brocade bangles and green buttchura. Along with bangles, the mehndi business has also flourished. In Shrawan, it is the custom of the Mithila people to apply mehndi on the palms, wrists and bare feet like green bangles. It is believed that mehndi applied artistically to the palms, nails, fingers and wrists in Shrawan will strengthen the love between husband and wife and eliminate the fear of snakes.

The color green is also considered a symbol of prosperity. Married Mithila people who celebrate the Sawane Monday festival apply mehndi on their palms, green bangles, green clothes and palms, wishing for the prosperity of their husbands. Similarly, unmarried Mithila people observe Sawane fast, wishing for a handsome groom. Since the custom of gifting green bangles, green bangles, mehndi and green sarees to each other is also widespread in Shrawan, the market for such goods is very busy during this month.
