Siraha. The wetlands around the Churekshetra, north of Lahan, have become suitable destinations for picnics and sightseeing. The ‘Hattidaha Wetland and Tourist Area’, located seven kilometers north of Lahan at the foot of the Churekshetra, has started to attract crowds of people to enjoy picnics during the winter.

Three years ago, after the wetlands within the ‘Koiralo Khola Model Community Forest’ were protected and managed and ‘eco-tourism’ was developed, crowds of people have started to visit and enjoy picnics here. Spread over an area of about five hectares, it has four ponds that do not dry up for twelve months, picnic areas and attractive gardens. Rudranarayan Chaudhary, chairman of the Hattidaha Wetland and Tourist Area Conservation Committee in Lahan Municipality-15, said, “People from Siraha, Saptari, Udayapur, Dhanusha, Mahottari and even neighboring India come here to have a forest feast.”

The local government has started showing interest in the conservation of the wetland area in the Chure area. Lahan Municipality Mayor Mahesh Prasad Chaudhary said, ‘We have given high priority to the physical development of the tourist area here.’ There was a crowd of people coming to visit the area and have forest food on Wednesday on the occasion of the English New Year. The wetlands here, which are home to temples of various gods and goddesses, as well as flora, fauna, and animals, are useful for forest picnics, study, research, and observation.
