‘We will introduce the Water Resources Bill in the House soon’

Kathmandu. Chairman of the Infrastructure Development Committee under the House of Representatives, Deepak Bahadur Singh, has said that the Water Resources Bill will be presented to the House soon. At a workshop on ‘Integrated River Basin Planning and Management for Effective Water Governance in Nepal’ organized by the Secretariat of the Water and Energy Commission here today, he said that the Water Resources Bill, which is under discussion in the Infrastructure Development Committee, will be finalized within two weeks and presented to the House.

‘We are going to finalize the Water Resources Bill after discussing it with experts in this field. We will present the bill to the House within two weeks,’ he said. Speaker Singh has expressed concern over the drying up of the stone streams in the valley.

Sarita Dawadi, Secretary, Ministry of Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation, said that the government is working on the concept of integrated water resources as a high priority. She said that the government is moving forward by establishing a River Basin Office for the conservation and proper use of water resources. Secretary Dawadi said that water allocation is important in the federal structure.

Madhu Prasad Bhetuwal, Secretary, Secretariat of the Water and Energy Commission, said that the government is working on the River Basin Plan as a high priority for the effective use of water resources, which are the country’s major resources. The commission is going to study the Lower Bheri subbasin of Karnali and the Roshi subbasin of Bagmati for proper use of water.

In the program, the country director of the Asian Development Bank, Arnaud Caucoich, and the country director of the World Bank, David Sislen, informed that the support and cooperation of the donor agencies will always be there for the protection and management of the water resources area. In the program, the president of the Water Resources Development Organization, Balkrishna Prasai, said that since the water crisis is increasing due to climate change, we should move forward together for its protection.
