We will appoint judges on an inclusive basis: Law Minister

Kathmandu. Minister for Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Ajay Kumar Chaurasia has said that the process of appointing judges will be taken forward on an inclusive basis. Addressing the first session of the first Young Lawyers Conference organized by the Nepal Bar Association and the Young Lawyers Concern Society here today, he mentioned that an inclusive basis will be emphasized during the appointment of judges.

Minister Chaurasia informed that the government is ready to work for the professional security and rights of young lawyers. Lawyers have an important role in judicial reform, and the act of disrespecting lawyers should stop, he said, “At the same time, the assault on lawyers should also stop.”

He said that the role of lawyers is significant in implementing a democratic system and that lawyers are supporting the government by being at the forefront in reforming the country’s system. He informed that the government is working systematically for good governance, transparency, rule of law and control of corruption.

Supreme Court Justice Sunil Kumar Pokharel said that there is a challenge in the professional security of young lawyers in particular and suggested that the Nepal Bar Association should play a role for professional security. ‘Young legal practitioners face the challenge of professional security, the Bar Association needs to take the initiative to solve this problem,’ he said, ‘Youth should also focus on study and research to strengthen their debate.’

Nepal Bar Association President Gopal Krishna Ghimire said that a ‘Lawyer Academy’ has been conceived to enhance the capacity of legal practitioners. He suggested that everyone should actively work to end corruption within the court.

Secretary General Anjita Khanal expressed the view that bar membership should not be distributed on the basis of political beliefs. He said, ’33 percent of legal practitioners are not affiliated with any political party. They have not been able to get bar membership. We will take the initiative to distribute bar membership to all of them in the coming days.’ He stressed that the judiciary should also be decentralized to provide judicial access to all sectors. The Young Legal Practitioner Survey Report was made public at the program, which was also addressed by representatives from the international community.
