Kathmandu. Nepal Police Inspector General Deepak Thapa has said that the implementation of the police’s security strategy has been challenged after royalist protesters resorted to violent activities during the Chaitra 15 movement.
Speaking at the State Affairs and Good Governance Committee meeting held at Singha Durbar on Friday, Police Chief Thapa said that the police used force after the protesters, who had said they would hold a peaceful protest, moved in a chaotic and violent manner.
He said that force was used accordingly after the protesters said they would occupy Singha Durbar, the Parliament building and the airport. He said that the police have moved forward with a strategy to minimize damage despite the lack of resources. He also said that the bullet vehicle was used to kill the police.
He explained that Durga Prasai was sent back to the stage because the police said that they would hold a peaceful protest. He said that the police had to use force because he had clashed with the police even before the protest started and had made provocative speeches on the stage.
He claimed that the police themselves had not fired tear gas on the stage and said, ‘We had not even thought of a bullet vehicle coming from there. In my 29 years of life, no vehicle had come like this to kill the police. Then our commander took him under control and took him down. From there, we sent him to the stage. Before he arrived, they were clashing and confronting the police, and making provocative speeches on some platforms.’
‘Then tear gas was fired from across the Minbhavan bridge. The protesters started attacking in groups. While controlling the situation, the protesters went out. When they said they would occupy the Parliament, Singha Durbar, and the airport, they started using force accordingly. We were not informed that the gas cell had expired. We had not destroyed it and had fired the gas in stock. But how did the rumor come that we fired the expired gas?’ He explained.
Sabin Maharjan died when he was shot outside the protest site when an attempt was made to burn the Narcotics Bureau of the Nepal Police. He said that 161 people were arrested on Chaitra 15 itself, and 94 were released on bail.
Noting that others are being investigated for treason and sedition crimes, he said that 39 vehicles were damaged by protesters and 2 people died in the demonstration.
