Kathmandu. US President Donald Trump has threatened to impose a 200 percent tax on wine, champagne and other alcoholic beverages imported from the EU in retaliation for the European Union’s (EU) tariffs on US whiskey. Since taking office, Trump has launched a trade war against international competitors and even partner countries.

US President Trump has been using tax increases as a tool to pressure countries on trade and other policy issues. Trump announced new tariffs on European wine imports after the EU announced it would impose tariffs on $28 billion worth of American goods starting in April in retaliation for tariffs on steel and aluminum imports.

“If this tariff increase is not removed immediately, the United States will soon be imposing a 200 percent tariff on all wine, champagne and spirits from France and other countries representing the EU,” Trump wrote on his Truth social platform on Thursday. Trump has strongly criticized the group, calling the 50 percent tariff on American whiskey “bad.”

He called the EU “one of the most hostile and abusive tax collectors and tax collectors in the world.” “The EU was created for the sole purpose of taking advantage of the United States,” he said. Following Trump’s latest announcement, France said it would retaliate against any tariffs on wine and spirits. “We will not bow to the warnings,” said Foreign Trade Minister Laurent Saint-Martin. “France is ‘determined to retaliate.’”
