Kathmandu. Australia’s unemployment rate rose in March, according to government data published on Thursday.
According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS), the unemployment rate reached 4.1 percent in March. It was 4.0 percent in February. The ABS said that the unemployment rate has been at 4.0 percent for five consecutive months, smoothing out seasonal fluctuations in employment.
The number of Australians in employment has increased by 308, or 2.2 percent, in the last 12 months, which is higher than the 20-year average of 2.0 percent before the pandemic. The number of Australians in employment rose by 32,200 between February and March, the ABS said, while the number of unemployed people rose by 3,000 over the same period.
Abs head of labour statistics Sean Crick said the employment-to-population ratio (working-age population) was 64.1 per cent in March. Despite the increase in employment, Crick said the number of hours Australians worked fell by 0.3 per cent in March, which he attributed to major weather events including cyclones.
