Prime Minister KP Oli and Maoist Chairman Prachanda had a friendly conversation in Parliament on Sunday. On Monday morning, UML Vice President Bishnu Poudel, who is also the Finance Minister, reached Khumaltar and met Maoist Chairman Prachanda. This meeting has been advertised as a consultation on the budget.
Recently, the second-tier leaders of the UML and the Maoists have also been moving forward with discussions for cooperation.
After meeting Prachanda on Monday, Finance Minister Poudel wrote on his Facebook – ‘Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Bishnu Prasad Poudel has consulted with the main opposition party, CPN-Maoist Center Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal Prachanda, about the budget for the upcoming fiscal year. 2082 Baisakh 23′
Leaders of the Nepali Congress are also pressuring the party leadership to come up with an alternative plan, saying that the Maoists and the UML can come together at any time. A major rift is emerging between the UML and the Congress, especially over the appointment of the Governor of Nepal Rastra Bank. The Congress is also insisting that its candidate must be made the Governor, while the UML has been insisting that the Governor cannot be removed since it is the leader of the government and the Finance Ministry is also under its party.
Congress leaders have been accusing the appointments of being UMLized, while UML leaders have also been expressing dissatisfaction saying that the Congress has been making unilateral appointments even during its own government.
After the possibility of a change in the ruling coalition before the budget, both the Congress and the UML have adopted a strategy to lure the Maoists. Sources say that Deuba is also in continuous discussions with the Maoists. Since the Congress and the UML are the main political rivals, the core teams of both parties seem to have reached the conclusion that cooperation between them cannot be beneficial to each other.
