Nawalpur. Two basic schools within Gaindakot Municipality in Nawalparasi (east of Bardaghat-Susta) have been merged. Mangaladevi Basic School in Gaindakot-3 and Saraswati Basic School in Gaindakot-5 have been merged with nearby schools.

According to Ram Prasad Adhikari, Education Officer of Gaindakot Municipality, Mangaladevi in Ward No. 3 had only nine students and was merged with Krishnagandaki Secondary School in the same ward. Similarly, Saraswati Basic School in Gaindakot-5 was merged with Janak Namuna Secondary School when another school was 200 meters away, he informed.

The official said that the objective is to provide quality education by merging community schools that are geographically close and have a small number of students. ‘A task force was formed to improve the educational quality of community schools within the city area,’ he said. ‘The report of the task force will be reviewed.’ More schools are also preparing to merge on the basis of ‘

As per the decision of the municipal executive, a five-member ‘School Education Structure Management and Educational Reform Suggestions Task Force’ was formed under the coordination of Municipal Education Officer Dr. Balkrishna Chapagain. The official informed that work is being done to formulate procedures and rules to implement the report submitted by this task force.

The task force has submitted suggestions on school adjustment, staff adjustment, class upgrading and downgrading, and operation of residential schools, according to task force coordinator and municipal education officer Chapagain.

‘We have given a report to operate residential schools and downgrade classes in wards 3 and 18, which are geographically remote, to increase the number of students and improve the quality of education,’ he said. ‘Since it will be difficult for students to study if the schools in these two hilly wards are merged, we have given a report to downgrade classes and build residential schools for the convenience of students.’

In other places in the ward Chapagain said that preparations are being made to adjust schools as per the rules issued by the government. According to him, there are 35 community schools in Gaindakot Municipality, which has 18 wards. Stating that 14 community schools operating within the municipality have less than 100 students, Municipal Education Officer Chapagain informed that there are eight schools with less than 50 students.

786 students are studying in community schools with less than 100 students. Chapagain said that there is a need to increase the number of students by continuing the student enrollment campaign, stating that 62 teachers are working in those schools.

The education regulations stipulate that the student-teacher ratio should be 40 students to one in the mountains, 45 students to one in the hills, and 50 students to one teacher in the Terai and the valley. Although the government has said that the student recruitment campaign will begin on April 20, the student recruitment campaign has not yet begun due to protests by community school teachers centered in the federal capital, Kathmandu.
