Kathmandu. NASA said that American astronauts Butch Wilmore and Sunny Williams, who have been stranded on the International Space Station for more than nine months, will be returned to Earth on Tuesday evening.

Wilmore and Williams will be returned to Earth on a SpaceX spacecraft along with other American astronauts and a Russian cosmonaut who reached space on Sunday morning.

They were unable to return to Earth in June 2024 after experiencing a problem with the propulsion (propulsion or propulsion is the production of force by any combination of pushing or pulling to modify the translational motion of an object.) during the first test flight of the Boeing Starliner spacecraft.

In space for nine months The US space agency NASA said in a statement on Sunday evening that the astronauts’ planned sea landing off the coast of Florida has been postponed to 5:57 p.m. on Tuesday. NASA had previously said the return trip was scheduled to take place earlier than Wednesday. NASA astronaut Nick Hague and Roscosmos cosmonaut Alexander Gorbunov will also return in the Dragon capsule.

For Wilmore and Williams, it will mark the end of an ordeal. Their stay is longer than the standard ISS rotation for astronauts of about six months, but it is far shorter than the US space record of 371 days set by NASA astronaut Frank Rubio in 2023, or the world record set by Russian cosmonaut Valery Polyakov, who spent 437 consecutive days on the Mir space station.

However, the unexpected nature of this journey, being away from their families for so long without adequate clothing and personal care supplies, has drawn interest and sympathy for them.
