Twelve killed, 24 injured in lightning strike in Okhaldhunga

Okhaldhunga. Twelve people have died in Okhaldhunga due to lightning. According to the statistics of the District Disaster Management Committee and the District Police Office, Okhaldhunga, 12 people have died due to lightning in a period of 6 years.

According to the statistics from the financial year 2076/77 to 2081/82, 12 people have died and 24 people have been injured due to lightning. There are statistics of damage worth lakhs during this period. In the last two years, two people have died due to lightning. 10 people have been injured, said Police Inspector Bijay Karki, Information Officer of the District Police Office, Okhaldhunga.

Three people have been injured due to lightning from Shrawan to Chaitra mid-year of the current fiscal year. During this period, 10 quadrupeds have died. Various electrical appliances have also been damaged. In the last fiscal year 2080-81, two people died and seven were injured when lightning struck six places.

Three houses were affected and five four-legged animals died, according to the statistics of the District Police Office, Okhaldhunga. Unlike other disasters, the local levels and concerned bodies of the district do not seem to have paid much attention to minimizing the damage caused by lightning.

The lack of necessary knowledge among citizens about ways to avoid lightning and the adoption of methods such as ‘earthing’ to prevent lightning, but this is not practiced in the district. FM radios and electronic equipment operating in the district have been suffering losses worth lakhs from lightning every year.
