Udayapur. As there has been no rain so far this year in the winter, the groundwater level has decreased in the Triyuga Municipality area of the district and the water in the tubewells has started drying up. As the water in the tubewells has started drying up, the locals are facing drinking water problems.
Local Prem Prasad Bhujel said that water has stopped coming from the tubewells in areas including Jogidaha of Triyuga Municipality-1, Khainpur, Mothai of Triyuga Municipality-2, Botetol Gaighat of Ward No. 12, Asari Portah, Laxmipur and others as the groundwater level has started decreasing.
Locals say that they are facing drinking water problems after more than four dozen tubewells in the Asari area have started drying up. Shantimaya Karki of Buddhachowk said that since the first week of Falgun, most of the tubewells in Triyuga-12, Gaighat, Botetol and Buddhachowk areas have stopped supplying water, forcing them to bring drinking water from elsewhere.
About three dozen or so wells and tubewells in the Buddhachowk area have dried up. According to Umananda Dhungana, a local from Jogidaha Bargachhi, Triyuga-1, the wells and tubewells have started drying up since the first week of Falgun. He said that due to this, most of the people have to drink contaminated water from wells.
Rekha Rajdhami said that there is also a problem in the Khaijanpur area of Triyuga-2, as the water in the tubewells has started drying up since the first week of Falgun. Mothaya’s plumber Devlal Chaudhary said, ‘This time, there was no rain even once or twice in Poush and Magh, which is why the groundwater level has dropped below 25 feet. All the tubewells and pipes buried at a depth of twenty-two feet have dried up, and now water will not come from these tubewells until there is heavy rain.’
Currently, drinking water problems have started in most villages of Triyuga after more than three hundred pipes and tubewells dried up. Sitaram Chaudhary of Laxmipur said that after water stopped coming from pipes and tubewells, some locals have started consuming water from wells near the villages.
