Banke. ‘I am coming from Surkhet now, suddenly I saw the vehicles stopped ahead, I thought there was an accident, but the ‘traffic light’ was on and the vehicles ahead were stopped,’ said Prabin Kumar Giri of Bangesimal, Surkhet, telling his experience of the traffic light implemented in Nepalgunj while stopping in a traffic jam.

He was coming from Surkhet to Nepalgunj today to meet his relative who is undergoing treatment at Nepalgunj Medical College and stopped in a traffic jam while following the traffic light rules implemented in Dhamboji. Motorcyclist Giri said that he found the traffic light rules effective as the roads in Nepalgunj were chaotic due to e-rickshaws.

‘When I used to come here, I have avoided many accidents due to e-rickshaws,’ he said. Now that the traffic light rules have been implemented, rickshaws will also ply in an orderly manner.’ With the implementation of the traffic light rules at Dhambojhi Chowk, which is considered the heart of Nepalgunj, vehicles moving fast from the east, west and north-south directions have now started moving at a slower speed as per the traffic rules.

Although the trial period of the traffic light started in Chaitra last year, the traffic light, which has been implemented regularly since 28th of last Poush, has helped not only the road but also the vehicle drivers and passengers to move on the road in an orderly manner. Balbir Khadka said. Since the implementation of the traffic light rules, this city has finally become a well-organized city, he said, ‘Earlier, people used to cross the road wherever they wanted, but now they have finally become aware that they have to walk according to the rules on the road.’

Sarita Thapa, a resident of Nepalgunj-10 Traffic Chowk, said that after the implementation of the traffic rules in Nepalgunj, she used to leave half an hour before the time to take her child to school. ‘Earlier, I used to leave 10-15 minutes before to take my daughter to school, but now I have to leave half an hour before because I would get stuck in traffic jams,’ he said.

For the first time, the traffic light rules have been implemented in Banke. Praveen Acharya, Senior Deputy Inspector of Traffic Police at the Nepalgunj Temporary Traffic Police Post, said that since the traffic light rules were implemented on December 11, vehicle drivers and passengers here have been following the rules.

‘Since the traffic light rules have only just been implemented here, we are teaching how to use traffic lights and lanes and in what situations, rather than issuing fines,’ he said. ‘It is becoming a bit difficult to explain the traffic light rules to drivers and passengers, especially women and those coming from rural areas.’ According to him, despite three to four reminders, eight people who did not follow the red light rules have been fined and issued a fine by issuing a chit.

So far, revenue of up to Rs. 4,000 has been collected from eight people through e-sewa, Khalti, e-challan and Rastriya Banijya Bank. Acharya, the chief of the temporary traffic police post, Nepalgunj, informed. With the implementation of traffic light rules in Nepalgunj, Acharya said that they are focusing on making people aware of how and under what conditions to use the road lane, rather than fines.

‘We are reminding those who are confused that drivers and passengers who pass through the left lane do not always have to stop when the traffic light is on, and teaching them to cross the road,’ he said. ‘Since the drivers and passengers here need public awareness rather than fines, we are trying to provide information about road rules during the duty hours.’

According to Chief Acharya, with the implementation of traffic light rules, the number of accidents from Dhambojhi to BP Chowk has decreased compared to before. Earlier, there were eight to ten minor accidents a week, but now, since the traffic light rules have been implemented, there have been no accidents at the same place, said Senior Deputy Inspector of Traffic Police Acharya. According to him, since the traffic light rules have been implemented, 165 people have been arrested for running a red light, while 323 people have been arrested for crossing the road illegally.
