Jaleshwor. Farmers of Mahottari Rural Municipality-6 have succeeded in raising their standard of living by cultivating tobacco as a cash crop, as it provides a good income with less effort and investment. After the annual decrease in paddy production due to problems with seeds, fertilizers and water, local farmers have started cultivating tobacco commercially, leaving traditional paddy farming behind.
Farmer Ramjivan Sah, who enjoys tobacco farming, says that most farmers in Mahottari Rural Municipality-6 have taken up tobacco farming due to the lack of paddy production commensurate with their hard work and investment. He informed that tobacco is cultivated in 40 percent of the village’s farmland. According to him, tobacco is cultivated on more than 50 bighas of land in the ward. More than 50 families in the ward are engaged in tobacco farming.
Local farmer Ram Ekwal Sah said that farmers here have started cultivating tobacco commercially, saying that one year’s income can buy rice for up to three years. According to him, one kilogram of tobacco is sold for 1,000 to 1,500 rupees in the local market, depending on the quality.
Indian traders buy tobacco here to make bidis and cigarettes. Another farmer, Mohan Mandal, said that up to two quintals of tobacco can be produced in one katta of land and a minimum annual income of 2 lakh rupees can be earned.
