Kathmandu. Minister for Forest and Environment Ain Bahadur Shahi Thakuri has said that there is a lack of modern equipment and manpower for forest fire control and management. Speaking at an international conference that began in Kathmandu on Sunday with the aim of reducing fire risk and promoting the latest technology related to electrical safety in Nepal, Minister Thakuri said this.
He said that the government has no other option other than fire engines to control forest fires, adding that the government is taking forest fires seriously and is thinking about various options. He said that all the mechanisms of the state have been mobilized for forest fire control and management. He said that due to the complex terrain, the government’s sole efforts to control forest fires would not be possible, and cooperation and coordination of all stakeholders were needed.
He said, “The Nepal government has taken forest fires seriously. And it is not possible for the Nepal government to reduce them. Everyone’s efforts are needed to control forest fires. The role of all stakeholders, civil society, local communities, and youth is also important. The Ministry of Forests and Environment of the Government of Nepal has been taking this as a major disaster and is taking action. All state mechanisms are being used in fire management. To some extent, forest fires have been reduced. The Nepal government has no other options other than fire engines to control forest fires. We are exploring various options.’
Noting that forest fires in Nepal cause huge loss of life and property due to lack of equipment and skilled manpower, he said that everyone needs to be aware of this. Experts from 14 different countries will present their working papers at the conference, which will be held until Monday.
