Tanahun. The construction work of the main dam of the 140-megawatt capacity Tanahun Hydropower Project under construction in Jhaputar, Rishing Rural Municipality-1, Tanahun is in full swing. This project, based on a traditional reservoir system, has initiated the construction work of the first ‘concrete’ dam in the history of Nepal’s hydropower.

According to the project, the main dam will be 140 meters high. Currently, concrete blocks have been raised to an average height of 10 meters on the foundation of the dam at the project site, informed Project Chief Shyamji Bhandari. He said that since temperature control is very sensitive in mass concreting during the construction of the dam, the work is being done by balancing the temperature using state-of-the-art technology.

According to Chief Bhandari, special attention has been paid to temperature control as the structure of the dam is very complex and linked to long-term safety. He said, “Now the height of the dam is being gradually increased, and the target is to complete the concrete pouring work within the next two years.”

The project has stated that the construction of the dam and the Seti River ‘diversion’ work under Package-1 are being completed and the work of placing concrete in the dam is being done. 42.5 percent physical progress has been achieved for Package-1.

The construction of Package-1 is being carried out by Songda Corporation, Vietnam-Kalika Construction Pvt. Ltd. Nepal, JV. The physical progress has increased due to the completion of river diversion, slope cutting, side management and digging of two large diversion tunnels under this package.

Three Construction work is underway in the package. The project has stated that 67 percent of the overall physical progress of the project has been made. The company’s capital structure and financial management The total cost of the project (including transmission lines, rural electrification and interest during the construction period) is US $ 550 million.

For this, financial management has been carried out by ADB with US $ 150 million, Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) with US $ 184 million, European Investment Bank with US $ 85 million and Government of Nepal-Nepal Electricity Authority with US $ 86 million.

Project Chief Bhandari said that the average annual electricity production from the project is estimated to be 587.7 million units for the first 10 years after the start of electricity production and 489.9 million units thereafter.

Similarly, under Package-2 The project includes the construction of tunnels, powerhouses, and hydromechanical and electromechanical equipment, supply, installation, and operation. Sino Hydro Corporation of China has been awarded the responsibility of constructing this project.

Similarly, under Package-3, KEC International Limited, India is constructing a 220 kV double circuit transmission line from Damauli to Bharatpur in Chitwan.
