Kathmandu. Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has called a cabinet meeting at 5 pm on Monday. Prime Minister Oli has made preparations to appoint the governor of the Nepal Rastra Bank before visiting Thailand tomorrow (Chait 19).
The cabinet meeting held on Chait 11 had formed a three-member recommendation committee under the leadership of Finance Minister Bishnu Prasad Poudel for the appointment of the governor of the Nepal Rastra Bank. The members of which are former governors Vijayanath Bhattarai and Dr. Bishwa Poudel. Since there is no need to seek public notice and application for the appointment of the governor, the committee will be able to make its favorable recommendation.
The term of service of the current governor Maha Prasad Adhikari ends on Chait 24. Prime Minister Oli is going to Thailand to participate in the sixth summit of BIMSTEC. He will stay in Thailand until Chaitra 23. A high-ranking source told Singhadarba, “If a name is finalized by 5 pm, the governor will be appointed today, for this it will also depend on the atmosphere of the House of Representatives meeting.”
According to those sources, the top three will be Deputy Governor of the National Bank Neelam Dhungana, Directors of the National Bank Dr. Prakash Shrestha, Dr. Gunakar Bhatta, Ashok Sherchan Sushil Bhatta. One of these will be appointed as the governor.
The government is under pressure to recommend a qualified person as governor due to the changing political environment. The previous three appointments have already gone to the Nepali Congress. The Securities and Exchange Board of Nepal, Insurance Authority and Nepal Stock Exchange have already gone to the Nepali Congress. Therefore, it is said that the governor of the National Bank will be part of the CPN-UML.
