Kavrepalanchok. The construction of the bridge connecting Kavrepalanchok and Hetauda in Bagmati Province, the capital of Makawanpur, has not been completed even after eight years of the contract. The contract was awarded to build the bridge on the Bagmati River at Khanikhola Rural Municipality-5 in Kavrepalanchok and Bagmati Rural Municipality-5 in Makawanpur.

Although the contract agreement was signed to complete the construction within two years, the bridge has not been constructed yet. The Ministry of Physical Infrastructure in the province has been urging for years after the Mahadev-Shikhar-Tamakoshi-JV, which had taken the contract to build the bridge, did not complete the work on time. The contract for the construction of the bridge was signed for Rs 116.5 million excluding VAT.

The then District Development Committee Office, Makawanpur, contracted for the construction of the bridge in the fiscal year 2073.074, so the citizens of Khanikhola and Mahabharat Rural Municipality had to suffer in commuting to the provincial capital, Hetauda, said Mahabharat Rural Municipality Chairman Kanchhalal Jimba. So far, the lifting of the pillars, piling in the middle of the river, and piling of the pillars towards Kavrepalanchok have been completed. The construction company has been claiming that 30 percent of the physical work has been completed so far.

‘It takes two hours to reach the provincial capital Hetauda from Taldhunga, the center of Khanikhola, so it would have been very easy to build a bridge here,’ said local resident Ram Prasad Timalsina. Construction entrepreneur Khadga Gopali said that there was some delay in building a road for transporting materials since the contract for building the bridge was awarded in a place where there was no road.

Bagmati Province Chief Minister Bahadur Singh Lama and Minister for Physical Infrastructure Development Aman Lal Maskey have pledged to prioritize the construction of the bridge. The teams from Mahabharat, Khanikhola and Bagmati rural municipalities submitted a letter of appeal to Chief Minister Lama on Wednesday.

On the occasion, Chief Minister Lama directed Minister of Physical Infrastructure Maske to expedite the process to complete the bridge at the earliest. According to him, Minister Maske said that he had identified the sick projects of the province and accelerated 29 of them, and three projects have been completed.
