Baglung. 10 kilometers of road has been blacktopped in the Baglung section of the national pride project Kaligandaki Corridor.

Work is being carried out in two sections, the first from Palungkhola to Balewa on the border of Gulmi and Baglung, and the second from Balewa to Maldhunga, by contracting. Kalika Construction is responsible for the 24-kilometer section from Palungkhola to Balewa and the 10-kilometer section from Balewa to Maldhunga is being worked on by Khadka/Krishna/BN JB. Information Officer of the Kaligandaki Corridor Project Office, Arun Khatri, informed that so far only the first section has been blacktopped.

He said that road widening, drainage construction and ‘rock cutting’ work is being done in the second section. Khatri said that 24 kilometers of the road, including 14 kilometers in the first section and 10 kilometers in the second section, are yet to be blacktopped. According to him, 50 percent of the work from Palungkhola to Balewa and 70 percent from Balewa to Maldhunga has been completed.

‘The cold season has started to end, now preparations have been made for blacktopping in many places, the remaining places will be blacktopped in some time,’ said Information Officer Khatri. ‘If we look at the progress of the Baglung section now, 77/78 percent of the work has been completed, blacktopping has not started for the second section, but other work is in full swing.’

The corridor project, which is a trilateral road, was started 14 years ago. The project, which started in the fiscal year 2067/68, has connected Jaimini Municipality and Baglung Municipality in the district. Jaimini covers 19.5 kilometers and Baglung Municipality covers 14.5 kilometers.

The corridor, which is 495 kilometers long from Gaindakot in Nawalpur to Korala border crossing, is 240 kilometers long in Maldhunga in Baglung. It has also shortened the journey from Mustang, Myagdi, Baglung, Parbat and other districts to Butwal, Bhairahawa and India.

After the corridor started being blacktopped, the journey from Baglung to Butwal, Bhairahawa and other places has been shortened, said local Sunil Thapa. He said that even though vehicles are plying on the unpaved road, more Indian pilgrims are now traveling to Muktinath.

He said, “The corridor directly connects Baglung with the Terai. Earlier, when going to Butwal, one had to take a detour via Pokhara. Now, one can go directly to Butwal from here. Earlier, it took almost nine hours to reach Butwal. Now, it takes less than five hours. This has provided great convenience to the people of Baglung. If all the roads are blacktopped, the journey will be even easier and shorter.”
