Banke. The construction of temporary embankments has been started in the surrounding areas to protect the settlements from the flood of rapti river. More than two dozen vulnerable villages of Rapti Sonari, Narainapur and Duduwa rural municipalities, which are at risk due to floods in the Rapti River, have been rescued from floods.
There is a problem of inundation in the riverbank areas every year. A technical team, including Dr Narayan Subedi, chief of the People’s Embankment Programme Project, has been constructing temporary emergency embankments using bembo piling technology for the past one week to prevent flooding of the river from entering the village.
According to Dr Subedi, the people’s embankment programme has been temporarily constructing an embankment from a depth of four metres to save the settlements and people’s lives as the locals living along the banks of the rapti river are unable to sleep through the night due to the pain of floods and river erosion.
According to him, emergency embankment works have been started in dhalaiya of Rapti sonari rural municipality-6, Piprahawa, Khalla Jhagadia, Devpurwa of ward-7, Sonbarsha, Gangapur (Kuderbetwa), Bhojbhagwanpur and duduwa rural municipalities of Narainapur rural municipality east of rapti river.
Subedi said that the construction of the temporary embankment has been started for now due to lack of budget and stones as well as the rain has already started. Nepali Congress Regional President Poshan KC said that around 30,000 people in the area are at high risk of flood due to the erosion of rapti river.
