Tehrathum. The hilly district of Koshi Province, Tehrathum, has started to be made accessible by the Mid-Hill (Pushpalal) Highway. Out of the total length of the highway, 117 km falls in Tehrathum. The highway, which enters Tehrathum from Majhitar on the Tamor River in Aathrai Rural Municipality-6 of the district, passes through Chuhandanda, the old educational center of the district, Sankranti, the old commercial center of the Aathrai area, Fedap, the district headquarters Myanglung, and the tourist market Basantapur.

The Mid-Hill Highway, whose construction began in the financial year 2064/65, has connected the residents of the district to easy access to transportation services. Before the highway was built, the locals of Aathrai area were forced to carry daily necessities including food grains from Phidim in neighboring Panchthar district by carrying them on dhakars. Narendra Ingnam of Aathrai said that after the highway was built, the one-day journey at that time was shortened to one hour. In the absence of a highway, one had to walk for a day to reach the district headquarters Myanglung for administrative and other work. Now, Rohit Kandangwa, ward chairman of Aathrai-1, informed that it can be reached in three hours by vehicle via the highway.

The highway has directly connected the municipalities of Aathrai, Phedap, Laligurans and others with the district headquarters Myanglung, while it has also become easier for residents of other municipalities to reach the district headquarters. Rajiv Dhungana, chairman of the Terhathum Chamber of Commerce and Industry, said that there is a facility to send the district’s products outside the district and deliver them to the district’s markets. All roads except 24.4 km in Tehrathum have been blacktopped along the highway connecting Chiwabhanjyang in Panchthar to Jhulaghat in Baitadi.

Raja Narayan Sardar, engineer at the Mid-Hill Highway Phidim Panchthar Office, informed that the section from Yawara-Panchami in Fedap Rural Municipality to Khorangwa Khola remains to be blacktopped. He said that 10 km of it is being blacktopped. He said that there is confusion as the budget for blacktopping the remaining section has not been ensured.
