Kathmandu. Nepal Teachers Federation President Laxmikishore Subedi has accused opponents of spreading false propaganda to defame the teachers’ movement.
He made this allegation while addressing the 27th day of the ongoing protest in Kathmandu since Chaitra 20 demanding the promulgation of the School Teachers Act on Monday. He said that the federation condemned the undemocratic steps taken by the police administration in the teachers’ movement that took place on Sunday. He accused the police of suppressing the movement by using ‘vigilantes’ and creating a stone-pelting situation.
He insisted that those in power may run away when they get tired, but the teachers and employees who have joined the movement will not run away from the movement if their demands are not met. He said that out of the 24-point demands of the teachers, the government has made an action plan of 16 points that can be implemented immediately and that is the official document.
He said, “Today, on the 27th day, thousands of teachers are standing firm on the front of the movement. These teachers and staff do not get tired, do not give up, and do not run away. Those in power may get tired, but teachers and staff do not get tired or give up. Yesterday, the police administration showed the height of barbarity. They showed naked dances. They deployed some helmeted vigilantes on teachers and staff who were in a peaceful movement, creating an environment of stone-pelting and on that pretext, they rained batons. They threw water cannons. We strongly condemn it. We want to strongly condemn the government’s undemocratic steps against teachers and staff. 62 of our friends were injured yesterday. The injured, some blindfolded, some with their legs amputated, some with bandages on their heads, have returned to the front lines of the movement. Some rumors have been created. Certain people are organizing and spreading various kinds of misinformation to divide the teachers’ movement. I urge you to be aware of that misinformation. I am hearing that sometimes there are five points, sometimes seven points, and sometimes nine points. We have nothing to scold you for. The Government of Nepal has issued a 24-point agenda for what needs to be done in the Act. That is our official document. We have made a 16-point action plan that the government can implement.’
Chairman Subedi said that 62 teachers were injured in Sunday’s protest and that 62,000 teachers are ready to be injured, but the protest will not stop until the Education Act is promulgated.
