Kathmandu. Teachers who have been protesting by holding an academic strike demanding the issuance of the Education Act have continued their agitation for the 14th day. Teachers who have been protesting on the streets since 20 Chaitra at the call of the Teachers’ Federation are also demonstrating on the Maitighar-Baneshwor road section on Tuesday. Meanwhile, despite repeated dialogues between the government and the officials and representatives of the Federation, no agreement has been reached.
Their demands include the immediate issuance of the Education Act and a single-door system for 18 types of teachers. Meanwhile, the government has stated that the government will issue an act from the upcoming session of Parliament after deciding on the services and facilities of teachers through the Council of Ministers and the Ministry.
However, saying that they have been repeatedly deceived by the government, the teachers have vowed not to leave the streets until an immediate decision is made and the act is issued. They say that there is no longer an atmosphere of trust in the government because the government has repeatedly deceived, confused and deceived teachers.
The federation’s meeting held on Monday reportedly decided not to participate in the Class 12 examination and not to check the answer sheets of Class 10. Nepal Teachers Federation President Laxmikishore Subedi said that the government has been deceived repeatedly and now only work can be trusted. He believes that this movement will draw a conclusion on the issue of issuing the Education Act. He insisted that they have only three options left and all of them are to protest. He said that they will return home only if the government convenes a budget session and issues the act. What stopped the government from calling a session? asked.
Dhading teacher Pramod Raj Adhikari, who participated in the protest, said that the government has delayed even the decision to be made by the Council of Ministers. On Tuesday, Adhikari said that he has taken a stand that he will not leave the streets until the environment for the formation of the Education Act is created. Teacher Chandra Badal, who came to the protest from Dhankuta, said that they are in a fight whether it is war or peace. He informed that the talks did not take place because the government has shown no interest in implementing the agreement made with the teachers. He stated that the government cannot create an environment of trust and said that he will not leave the streets until the act is issued.
Teacher Anandaram Khanal accused the government of attacking the state’s education system by not addressing the demands of the teachers. He informed that he is fighting his last battle to improve Nepal’s education sector and ensure quality education. Teacher Pawan Raj Dahal said that it is shameful for the government to continue the protest demanding the act even when the government has to take to the streets to amend it after issuing the act based on past agreements. He accused the government of trying to run away from education. He said that the government is trying to make the future of children dark and education substandard by not implementing the agreements with teachers, and said that they will not leave the streets until their demands are met.
He informed that he is not ready to leave the streets because he has joined the protest to win or lose. Makawanpur teacher Durga Dhungana Ghimire informed that she does not trust the government because the government has not implemented the decisions it has made itself.
The Nepal Teachers Federation has already said that it will launch a strong protest if the government does not address its demands through peaceful protests. Last year, teachers protested with the same demand. After the protest, an agreement was reached with the government on Chaitra 20, 2080 BS to address the demands. However, after a year of the agreement, the government has not shown any sign of implementing it, and the teachers have resumed the protest.
The government is under pressure to immediately address the 14-day protest and fulfill the teachers’ demands and return the teachers to school, while the teachers are also under moral pressure to withdraw the academic strike and resume school with the start of the new academic session.
