Kathmandu. Tank containers have started arriving at Birgunj Dry Port. For the first time, a container carrying crude oil arrived at the rail dry port on Falgun 3. A tank container carrying soybean oil raw material (crude oil) purchased by Shivshakti Pvt. Ltd., an edible oil manufacturing industry in Bara, Jitpur, has arrived at the dry port.

Twenty thousand metric tons of crude oil in 90 20-foot tank containers has entered Nepal from Argentina via Halliya for the first time through the Birgunj Dry Port. Officials of the oil import company say that transporting crude oil, which has been transported only by road, by rail will save an average of 15 percent in transportation costs compared to road transport.

Initially, the Birgunj Dry Port, which has been in operation since 2004, only received container, bulk, and breakbulk cargo, but loose cargo (coal) started arriving from 2080 Ashar 16 (July 01, 2023). Now that crude oil has started arriving at the dry port, the trade through the Birgunj border via rail is set to increase further.

Since the tank containers come completely sealed, there will be no incidents of oil theft on the way, and it will be imported safely, and it will also help importers get rid of the problem of not having enough tankers when transporting by road.

With the start of the tank container service, it will further help in facilitating Nepal’s international trade and the Birgunj Dry Port will be operational at full capacity, said Ashish Gajurel, executive director of the committee. He said, ‘We started managing coal from this year and now we have also started managing crude oil. We are increasing the capacity of our ports and are also modernizing them.’

Jagurel said that the arrival of tank containers at the Birgunj Dry Port is a positive aspect in trade facilitation.
