Ramechhap. The construction of Sunkoshi Marine Diversion on the border of Ramechhap and Sindhuli, which has been working at a slow pace due to the flood in the Sunkoshi River on October 12, has started at a rapid pace today. Minister for Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation Deepak Khadka inspected the project site on May 12 and directed the concerned employees and contractors to complete the work within the stipulated time.
During the monitoring, Minister Khadka informed the contractors that the government could also choose another route if they did not work to achieve the target.
The 13.2-kilometer tunnel has already been completed for the project, which is a project of national pride, while the contractors are working to complete it as soon as possible by increasing the headbox work by only 20 percent. The construction of the headbox was going on at a slow pace after the flood in the Sunkoshi River in September last year caused a lot of damage to the construction work.
Construction entrepreneur Raman Pattel had said that although the construction of the headbox of the project was going on by Pattel Raman Joint Venture, the work could not be completed within the deadline due to lack of payment of bills. However, he said that the work has been expedited after the minister’s assurance that all the demands will be fulfilled.
After the completion of the project, 122,000 hectares of land in more than eight districts of Tarai will be irrigated, 32 MEGAWATT electricity will be generated and 10 percent of the total water will be used as drinking water. Director General of the Department of Water Resources and Irrigation, Sanjeev Baral, said rs 1.2 billion has already been spent on the project. At present, the construction work of the dam (headbox) is going on at Seleghat of Ward No. 6 of Manthali Municipality of Ramechhap.
