Agency. Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi said that Egypt is suffering a monthly loss in Suez Canal revenues due to the situation in the region. He said that it is estimated at 800 million US dollars.
Sisi made the remarks at the annual Ramadan Iftar dinner hosted by the armed forces, according to the Egyptian presidential office. The Egyptian president confirmed that the Egyptian economy is showing positive indicators, pointing to the recent approval of the International Monetary Fund to distribute a new tranche to Egypt.
Tensions in the Red Sea arose in November 2023 when Yemen’s Houthi group began attacking Israeli-affiliated ships in a show of solidarity with Gaza during the Hamas-Israeli conflict. This has affected transit through important man-made waterways.
Stability has returned to the Red Sea region with the implementation of the Gaza ceasefire agreement on January 19.
