Kathmandu. Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has said that various options are being studied for the construction of permanent structures in the Sunsari Morang Irrigation Project. Speaking at a question-and-answer session with lawmakers in the House of Representatives meeting on Thursday, he said this.
He said that although irrigation services have been provided by constructing a side intake near the Koshi River, the required water could not be supplied to the side intake as the river changed its course and blocked the flow of water on the right side. He said that technical and economic options are being sought for the sustainable operation of the project.
He said, ‘Irrigation services are being provided by constructing a side intake near the Koshi River. For the past few years, the Koshi River has been changing its course and blocking the flow of water on the right side, so it has not been possible to enter the required water in the side intake. However, the project has been providing irrigation facilities by building temporary dams every winter and allowing water to enter the intake as much as possible. Various options are being studied to see how to operate water sustainably throughout the year by constructing a permanent structure. Homework will be carried out by selecting technically and economically feasible options.’
The Sunsari Morang Irrigation Project has been providing irrigation facilities to 68,000 hectares of land, including 28,000 in Morang and 40,000 in Sunsari district. The length of the project’s canals is more than 1,500 kilometers, including 53 kilometers of main canals, 400 kilometers of branch canals, branch canals and culverts.
