Kathmandu. South Korea’s acting president and prime minister Han Deok-soo announced his resignation in a televised address to the nation on Thursday. Han said he decided to step down to do what he can and must do during the crisis the country is facing.
He said that unless extreme politics are abandoned and a foundation of cooperation is established, division and conflict will continue regardless of who is in power. He stressed that all means will be used to best serve South Korea at this time and in the future.
With Han’s resignation, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy and Finance Choi Sang-mok will serve as acting president. Han is expected to announce his candidacy for the snap presidential election on Friday, June 3.
He is one of the favorite presidential candidates for conservative voters after former President Yun Suk-yeol was removed from office for his failed martial law. A recent poll showed Han receiving 13 percent approval.
That surpassed the approval rating of the conservative People Power Party’s presidential candidate. This majority was far lower than the 42 percent support for the liberal Democratic Party’s presidential candidate, Lee Jae-myung.
