Kathmandu. Nepali Congress MP Kamala Panta has said that there has been a significant increase in the participation of women in various state bodies. Speaking during a special session of the National Assembly on Sunday, she said this. She said that the participation of women in local government has reached the highest at 41 percent.
She said that although the number of women has increased in terms of participation, there are many weaknesses in meaningful participation. She said that some of the commitments made by the state in the field of women and children are limited to slogans.
She stressed the need to adopt a more liberal policy to make the presence of women in state bodies meaningful.
She said, “When it comes to women and children, it is our belief and the reality is the same. Now, in order to become progressive, the commitments we have made have been implemented in some places. There has been an increase in participation. But there is a weakness in meaningful participation. The issue for women now is meaningful participation. The practice of bypassing women as soon as some loopholes are found and making them weak is still there. On the positive side, there are 34 percent in the federal parliament, 36.5 percent in the provincial assembly, 41.1 percent in the local level, and 28 percent in the civil service, which was 4 percent a few years ago. There needs to be more liberalization in this.
National Assembly member Panta said that women have to face inequality because they are women. She said that strong laws are needed to end discrimination between daughters and sons.
