Baglung. Students in the Dhorpatan Valley area have fallen ill as the cold weather has worsened due to snowfall since Thursday. More than 50 students from the same school have fallen ill, affecting their studies.
Students of Jyoti Bikas Secondary School and Siddhabarah Primary School in Dhorpatan Municipality-9 in Baglung have fallen ill. Out of 183 students of Jyoti Bikas Secondary School, only about 100 students have come to study, said Principal Chak Bahadur Adai. He said that the students who came to school have also fallen ill with fever and cold. It had been snowing in Dhorpatan since Thursday night.
Principal Adai said that the students fell ill due to the cold weather as there was no material to keep the children warm in the school. He said that the school may have to be closed if the children start falling ill. The school, which was closed since December 20 due to cold weather, has been operational since January 20, Adai informed.
‘It snowed when the summer was increasing, many students fell ill and teaching was affected. It snowed for two days, cold winds blow, there is still thick snow on the upper hills,’ Adai said. ‘The attendance of children in the school is decreasing. If there were materials to make students comfortable during cold weather, it would be easier to teach. There are cement buildings in cold places, which makes it even colder.’ He said that when the room was cold, he used to teach sitting in the field, and it was difficult to teach when the cold winds blew all day. Adai says that it would be easier to manage the heater in the classroom.
Chiranjivi Ghimire, Chief Administrative Officer of Dhorpatan Municipality, said that nothing else has been done except for the construction of the infrastructure. He says that it is necessary to provide warm materials to ensure safe and comfortable learning for children in cold places.
