Sikta Irrigation: Construction of 6th branch canal of Western Main Canal at a cost of Rs 378.2 million

Banke. Banke: The sixth branch canal of the Western Main Canal has been completed under the Sikta Irrigation Project of national pride under construction in Banke. After the construction of the sixth Guruwagaun branch canal in Baijnath Rural Municipality-5, the test was carried out by releasing water on Monday.

Farmers are happy after water was released into the canal. At the time of planting, farmers are pumping water by installing pumpsets. Project Director Raju Acharya said that it will be easier for the farmers after the construction of branches and sub-branches from this canal. According to him, the 11-km-long canal is expected to benefit 100,000 people by providing irrigation facility to 7,081 hectares of land. After the release of water into the canal, an 11-kilometer canal area was also inspected. Wire mesh has been erected along the canal in the settlement area and staircase has also been erected in some places for the demand and convenience of the locals.

Bhairab Subhani JV Kathmandu had signed an agreement on April 1, 2080 to complete the work within three years. The vikram samvat is to be completed on March 1, 2083. Project engineer Binesh Shrestha said the contract was awarded at a cost of Rs 378.28 million. According to him, 98 percent physical progress has been made so far in the Guruwagaun branch canal. Now there is only some general finishing work left. The Guruwagaun branch canal has been constructed with the aim of irrigating agricultural land in Baijnath and Khajura rural municipalities of Banke.

The project aims to irrigate 42,766 hectares of land in Banke by constructing a dam on the Rapti River at Agaia of Rapti Sonari-2. Arrangements have been made for irrigation through the branch canal by distributing water from two main canals namely western canal and eastern canal.

A target has been set to irrigate 33,766 hectares of land through the western main canal and 9,000 hectares through the eastern canal. So far, 21,000 hectares have been irrigated. The construction of 45.25 kilometers of the western main canal has been completed. Of the 53.50 kilometers of the eastern main canal, 37.68 kilometers have been completed, said Director of Sikta Irrigation Project Acharya.
