Myagdi. A technically flawed transmission line has been built to connect the electricity generated by the four hydropower projects in the final stage of construction in the Rahughat Basin to the central system.
The hydropower project has built a ‘crossing’ by placing the wire of the 220 kV transmission line below the Dandakhet-Rahughat 132 kV capacity and the distance between the wires of the two transmission lines is less than the standard.
In Raghuganga Rural Municipality-3, Piple, the transmission line of the project coming from the north to the south and the Dandakhet-Rahughat going from the west to the east ‘cross’ each other. Technically, the wire of the higher capacity transmission line should be above the lower capacity line. The distance between the upper wire of the 132 kV line and the lower wire of the 220 kV line at the crossing point is 4.5 meters.
To connect the electricity generated by the hydropower project under construction on the Myagdi River and its tributaries to the central grid, the Nepal Electricity Authority has completed the construction of a 25-kilometer-long 132 kV transmission line connecting Malika Rural Municipality-7, Dandakhet, to Raghuganga Rural Municipality-3, Ambang, and substations at both locations.
The transmission line crossing built by the hydropower project is located between towers numbered ‘AP2’ and ‘AP3’ of the Dandakhet-Rahughat transmission line. Following delays in the construction of the Dandakhet-Rahughat transmission line, which began construction in 2021, four projects with a capacity of 130.8 MW have built an alternative transmission line from Piple to Tilkenichhaur to connect to the 220 kV Dana-Khurkot transmission line as an alternative to the Ambang substation.
In the Rahughat basin, the 37.5 MW Chimkhola-Rahughat-Mangle, 48.5 MW Upper Rahughat, 21.3 MW Thulokhola, and 23.5 MW Upper Thulokhola hydropower projects are in preparation for trial production. Roshan Agrawal, head of the Dandakhet-Rahughat Transmission Line Project, said that the hydropower projects have constructed a technically flawed transmission line by constructing a haphazard tower against the standards without coordination.
“The hydropower project has been indifferent and indifferent even after we have written to it for nine months to remove the line built under our line,” he said. “They have been facing problems since they have not implemented the agreement to build another tower and extend the line by laying wires above 132 kV.” When contacted for comments on this issue, Gopal Niure, representative of Thulokhola, Upper Rahughat, and Indra Dhakal, representative of Tudi Power, promoter of Chimkhola-Mangale-Rahughat, did not pick up the phone. Prakash Timilsina, resident engineer of Tudi Power, responded that preparations are underway to build a taller tower by placing the 220 kV wire higher than the 132 kV one, as agreed.
