Kathmandu. National Assembly members have stressed the need to set a limit on the amount of savings in cooperatives.
During today’s meeting of the National Assembly, during the clause-wise discussion on the Bill to Amend Some Nepal Acts Related to Cooperatives, 2081, MP Tul Prasad Bishwakarma said that it would not be appropriate to provide for a maximum of two terms for the office bearers of the board of directors of cooperatives with a turnover of less than 100 million. ‘A limit on cooperative savings should be set. If the limit on savings and loans is set, there will be no need to resort to the path of suicide by being cheated by cooperatives,’ he said.
MP Bishnu Bahadur Bishwakarma suggested that a provision should be made for reappointment of the chairman and members of the cooperative board of directors only if recommended based on the justification of the term of office. MP Shree Krishna Prasad Adhikari emphasized that the Act should pave the way for confiscation of assets of cooperatives with bad intentions and that legal doors should be opened to increase regulation and monitoring.
MPs Rajendra Lakshmi Gairai, Manarupa Sharma, Ghanashyam Rijal, and Gangakumari Belbase participated in the discussion. Responding to the questions raised in the meeting, Minister for Land Management, Cooperatives and Poverty Alleviation, Balram Adhikari, said that the law will be made as per the need.
In today’s meeting, a proposal was presented to hold a clause-wise discussion in the House on the Bill to Amend Some Nepal Acts Relating to Cooperatives, 2081, received with a message from the House of Representatives.
