Kavrepalanchowk. The blacktopping of the Sanga-Dhulikhel road section under the Araniko Highway has been started. According to the Suryabinayak-Dhulikhel, Dhulikhel-Sindhuli-Bardibas road project, the three-kilometer road from Dhulikhel to Banepa will be blacktopped by mid-July.
The Sanga-Dhulikhel road section of the Araniko Highway is being expanded to six lanes. The blacktopping of the Sanga-Dhulikhel section has been started as the road is being expanded in two sections of Suryabinayak-Sanga and Sanga-Dhulikhel. Project engineer Bishnu Prasad Khanal said the one-kilometer road from Dhulikhel Main Chowk to Bansagari towards Banepa has been blacktopped.
At present, the second level of blacktopping is being completed with modern technology. According to Khanal, the main part of the road will be blacktopped by 80 centimeters. In the first layer, a 30 to 35-cm ‘subbase’, then a 20-cm ‘CTP’ and a 10-cm crack-relief layer and a 11 to 13 cm DBM on it and a 6 cm ‘asphalt concrete layer’ is being blacktopped with modern technology.
Suryabinayak-Dhulikhel is 16 km long. Suryabinayak-Sanga is 7.5 km and Sanga-Dhulikhel is 8.5 km. The contract was signed in two phases and two sections to complete the six-lane road expansion within three years. The contract for Suryabinayak-Sanga was signed in December 2019 and the contract for Sanga-Dhulikhel was signed in December 2018.
There is a contract agreement to construct six lanes including two service lanes and four main lanes of the road section. According to Engineer Khanal, about 50 percent of the physical progress of the Sanga-Dhulikhel road section has been completed so far. The project aims to complete the 3-km blacktopping by mid-July and make about 60 per cent physical progress.
Under the project, rs 4.05 billion was signed for the expansion of the 8.4-km road section from Sanga to Dhulikhel in the first phase and Rs 3.88 billion for the Suryabinayak-Sanga road section started in the second phase.
The expansion has been started due to increasing traffic congestion every year due to narrow roads. Vehicular traffic on the highway is increasing day by day after the opening of tatopani border point in Sindhupalchowk, a short distance with China. At present, more than 2,500 vehicles ply on this highway from Koteshwor to the mid-hilly region and eastern Tarai alone.
