Kathmandu. The chairman of Samsung Electronics has said that it needs to adopt a ‘do or die’ mindset to face the challenges posed by artificial intelligence (AI).
South Korean technology giant Samsung is struggling to meet the needs of US technology company Nvidia as rival SK Hynix has become the US technology company Nvidia’s main supplier of high ‘bandwidth memory (HBM) chips’ for its ‘AI graphics processing unit (GPU)’.
Samsung, the world’s largest memory chip maker, had already admitted in October last year that it was facing a ‘crisis’. It has admitted that questions have been raised about its ‘core technological competitiveness and the future of the company’. “Samsung is facing a ‘do or die’ situation,” South Korean news agency Yonhap reported, citing Samsung Chairman Lee Jae-yong as saying during a training session for top executives. “Lee’s message is not about the crisis, but about the spirit of facing it,” Yonhap quoted a company source as saying. “Even if we have to give up short-term profits, we must invest for the future,” he said. Meanwhile, a Samsung spokesman told AFP on Monday that “Lee himself did not say this message,” without elaborating.
Samsung’s operating profit fell by almost a third in the fourth quarter of last year due to research spending. Lee was acquitted last month of charges related to a controversial merger in 2015. However, prosecutors had claimed the charges were designed to erode his control over the South Korean technology company. During the latest hearing, Lee said he was aware of growing concerns about Samsung’s future. “The reality we face is more difficult than ever, but we are determined to overcome these challenges and move forward.”
