Kathmandu. “Due to the thick snow on Everest, it was difficult to fix the rope. It was also difficult to fix the ladder due to the large rocks and black stones in the Khumbu Icefall area,” expedition leader Lakpa Sherpa told RSS from the base camp, referring to the skilled Sherpa climbers who fix the rope.
This year’s spring Everest climbing season began after a seven-member Sherpa team deployed from the ATK Expedition Company fixed the torii on the peak of Everest at 5 pm on Friday and opened the climbing door.
Five Sherpas deployed from the same company fixed the ropes on the peaks of Lhotse and Ama Dablam on Thursday The Department of Tourism has stated that the climbing has officially begun with the completion of the road to the peak of Everest.
Liladhar Awasthi, director of the department, said, “This year’s Everest climbing has officially begun with the completion of the rope hanging work on the peak of Everest, and now other climbers will also head towards the summit depending on the weather conditions.” He said that the first phase is expected to see the highest number of climbers as the weather is favorable.
Shiva Bahadur Sapkota, general secretary of the Everest Climbing Association, said that the positive message of Everest climbing will help promote adventure tourism in Nepal. He mentioned that the relevant agencies and expedition companies have made effective management to make the climbing safe and organized. Climber Lakpa Sherpa, who is also the Managing Director of ATK Expedition Company, said that the maximum number of climbers is likely to reach the peak from May 11 to 14 as the weather is favorable for climbing Mount Everest.
He said, “The weather is favorable. The climbing of foreign climbers will begin from today. Currently, a large number of climbers are heading towards the peak from the third camp of Mount Everest.” Sherpa workers are deployed to arrange oxygen and other materials at the third and fourth camps of Mount Everest, while climbers waiting to climb are busy with climbing practice.
Climbers are moving back and forth from the base camp to the third camp. The ‘summit window’ is from May 12 to 15, and expedition companies expect a lot of climbing during that period. With snowfall forecast for May 16 and 17, it is said that this tight climb may be disrupted as per the climbers’ plan to reach the peak before then. Sherpa, the managing director of ATK Company, who was given the responsibility of rope fixing to the peak of Everest, said, “This time, it has become difficult to fix the rope due to thick snow on Everest. A lot of climbing is expected in the first window.”
A seven-member Sherpa team led by Ashok Lama has succeeded in reaching the peak of Everest. The team includes Tshering Pemba Sherpa, Pem Nurbu Sherpa, Tashi Sherpa, Karma Gyaljen Sherpa, Tashi Gyaljen Sherpa and Pastenji Sherpa. This time, out of 16 Sherpas deployed to fix the ropes on Everest, only seven managed to reach the peak.
It is reported that it has been difficult to build a road not only on Everest but also on Lhotse and Ama Dablam mountains due to thick snow. Sherpas have stated that the work of building a road has been difficult because more rocks have been found in the climbing area due to the effects of climate change. The company has stated that it took 14 days to build a road from the second camp to the fourth camp of Everest due to bad weather. From the fourth camp, the Sherpa team reached the peak in two days.
“The route is good, the weather is clear. Hundreds of climbers are waiting to climb,” said the climber Sherpa, “There is a possibility of more summits from May 11 to 15. The next weather window is from May 19 to 24.” This season, world record holder Aaroshi Kami Rita Sherpa is on the verge of breaking her own record by climbing Mount Everest for the 31st time. Tashi Gyaljen Sherpa has reached Everest with a plan to set a world record by climbing Everest four times in 20 days.
Similarly, another world record-holder climber, Sanu Sherpa, has gone on a climb this season with a very special guest. Having successfully climbed mountains above eight thousand meters twice, he plans to break his own record by climbing mountains above eight thousand meters for the third time.
India’s oldest citizen is preparing to climb. This time, there are 55 climbers from the ATK company, including Everest and Lhotse. The Sherpa informed that it is extremely cold at the base camp at an altitude of 5,364 meters above sea level. Despite the minus 20 degree cold, climbers are busy with climbing practice. There is a lot of activity in the camp. The Sherpa is in the ‘High Caps Set’ (third and fourth camp management), while the climbers are in Lukla, Namche, and Base Camp.
About half of the climbers have reached the third camp. Looking at the current situation, the Managing Director Sherpa said that there is a possibility of more traffic jams on Everest on May 14 and 15. He said that this time, the climbing of Everest has been opened early to make it easier for many climbers. Lakpa Sherpa, who fixed the ropes on Everest in 2013 and 2017, said that due to climate change, more rocks have been found in the Everest region in recent years due to melting snow.
There is thick snow in the areas where there is snow. The Everest Pollution Control Committee (SPCC) has stated that it will lift the ladders on the road on May 29 as more rocks have been seen in the Khumbu Icefall. The climbers have gone to Everest with a 75-day climbing permit from the Tourism Department. The Everest climb takes 40 days. After reaching the peak of Everest, the climbers descend to the base camp within two days. They practice for 10 to 15 days up to the third camp. Mingma Sherpa, president of Sabane Summit Treks Pvt. Ltd., said that the weather is favorable and this time the Everest expedition is expected to be exciting.
More than 100 climbers have gone to Everest this time through his company. The Expedition Operators Association has fixed the rope from the second camp to the peak.
