Siraha. The revenue collected at the Thadi Customs Office in Siraha during the first six months of the current fiscal year has been less than the target set by the Customs Department. The target set for this customs office to collect Rs 42.342 crore in the fiscal year 2081/82 was Rs 25.69 crore by mid-December. However, during this six-month period, the office has collected only Rs 17.145 crore in revenue. This is about 84 percent of the target.

According to the office’s customs officer Mukesh Kumar Pathak, the reason for the failure to collect the expected revenue is the lack of ‘food and plant quarantine’ in Siraha district. He said, ‘There are two main customs offices and one small customs office in this district. But due to the lack of food and plant quarantine in the district, food items could not be cleared through customs and the expected revenue collection could not be achieved.

Customs Officer Pathak said that illegal exports and imports were taking place due to the lack of a plant quarantine office and claimed that revenue collection would increase by two times if food items could be brought through the customs clearance process legally. He informed that despite repeated initiatives in the concerned ministries and departments, a hearing could not be held.
