Kathmandu. Nagarik Unmukti Party chairperson Ranjita Shrestha has objected to the arrest of party patron Resham Chaudhary and demanded an impartial investigation. Speaking in the House of Representatives meeting on Tuesday, chairperson Shrestha made this demand.

She said that the essence of democracy is to question, protest and speak in favor of justice, and that it is objectionable that an elected representative be arrested from the program venue. On April 17, the police arrested Resham Chaudhary on the basis of an unauthorized letter written by a Supreme Court employee and kept him in the Dillibazaar jail for about five hours. The police have arrested Bista, the employee who wrote the letter, and are currently investigating.

Shreshtha commented that Chaudhary’s arrest was an insult to federalism, inclusiveness, and faith in democracy, and urged the government to conduct a thorough study of the incident and respond publicly.

She said, “We are in government, but the main goal of democracy is to stand for the truth. Questioning, protesting, and speaking out for justice is the essence of democracy. Today, I want to question the government through the Speaker – how can an elected representative, a leader of the people be arrested in such a way from a program venue. How can personal gain be placed above the law? Let this incident be studied in depth. Because this is not just the arrest of one person. Federalism, inclusiveness, and faith in democracy have been insulted.” Let there be a fair investigation into the administrative arbitrariness that took place on April 17. Let there be a public answer for the treatment given to Resham Chaudhary.’

The Citizens’ Liberation Party is participating in the KP Sharma Oli-led government with one minister of state.
