Dang. At present, the farmlands of the Ghorahi area are covered with lush monsoon grass. Farmers here have said that it has become easier to raise livestock by cultivating monsoon grass. Farmers have started cultivating grassland as a cash crop.
Saraswati Sharma of Ghorahi Sub-metropolitan City-6 has raised one cow and eight goats. She said that she has cultivated monsoon grass on 15 acres of land near her house. She informed that it has become easier to raise cows and goats by feeding monsoon grass. ‘I have been planting barsim grass in my 15-acre field in winter instead of mustard, lentils and wheat,’ she said. ‘It has been six years since I started planting grass in the entire field. I have also been able to cut it when it is green and feed it to cows and goats.’
She said that this is a very useful grass that can also be fed to the dry stalks and can be sold if it bears fruit. She said, ‘I don’t have to wander around looking for grass for cows and goats, as I can easily get it from my own farm, which also saves time.’
Balkrishna Khanal of Ghorahi-6 Bachaha has planted this grass in 17-acre field. He has been raising goats commercially. He has 70 goats. He said that goat farming has become easier by cutting and feeding them four to five times in a season after sowing the winter grass. He informed that it is easier to cultivate the grass with the winter grass because there is no need to sow fertilizer and the fertilizer applied to the rice also works with the grass. Grass farming has become more attractive because it is not difficult to cultivate and maintain after sowing the seeds. This grass benefits all cattle, sheep and goats.
Bikash Chaudhary of Karjahi, Ghorahi-17, has raised two buffaloes and eight goats. He said, “I have sown the winter grass in twelve acres of land, it has become easier to raise the livestock.” He said that he produces seeds at home and cultivates grass every year. “Once it is cut, most of the livestock farmers here have increased their interest in grass farming. During the rainy season, this grass is sown like lentil seeds before harvesting the paddy planted. When the grass grows, the paddy must have been cut, some people have even sown it by plowing the field. Green and dried grass is considered very good for feeding cattle,” he said.
Farmers of Ghorahi-6 have cultivated grass on 12 to 2.5 bighas. Farmers’ interest in this has increased as it is more profitable than other crops. Farmers from Guruwagaun, Gurgai, Beruwagaun, Jajragaun, Bergai, Fachakpur and Aghara in Ghorahi-6 and Gairagaun in Ghorahi-17 have cultivated grass. Now, green grass farming can be seen throughout the field. Bimal Adhikari, secretary of the Shivashakti Grass Seed Producers Association, informed that 160 households in the area are currently cultivating grass. Adhikari said that farmers are attracted to this because the investment is low and the income is good.
According to him, there is no need to plow, no need to apply fertilizer, and since the fertilizer applied to the rice works, there is a saving in fertilizer. It is also more convenient for farmers because there is no need to irrigate repeatedly. Grass is cultivated in the rainy season after rice cultivation. It is also known as (Greengold). Recently, farmers from almost all municipalities in Dang have started cultivating this grass. Adhikari informed that it is very beneficial as the animals that eat this grass increase their milk production.
