Mustang. The rain has affected the apple trees that are about to bloom here. This is expected to reduce apple production. This year, very few flowers bloomed on local apple trees in the district. The rain has affected the apple trees that were blooming, so apple production is expected to decrease this year, informed Padmanath Atreya, head of the office of the Temperate Horticulture Development Center Marfa Farm.

He said, ‘Last year, apple production increased due to the bloom of many flowers. This year, the flowers also bloomed very less because the energy stored in the plants was very low. The flowers that did bloom were also affected by wind and water. Apple trees require energy to bloom abundantly. Even if there are many apple flowers on the tree, the apple tree cannot obtain the required stored energy to bloom next year.’

Center Chief Atreya said that apple production in the district was good last year. Last year, 7,330 metric tons of apples were produced. The apple production increased by 734 metric tons compared to the previous year.

Center Chief Atreya said that although the local variety of apple orchards in the district had fewer flowers, the hybrid apple orchards based on high-density technology were not affected much.

‘We had observed the apple orchards of Kobang, Tukuche, Marfa, Syang, Thini, Jomsom and Muktinath, where although the local variety of apple orchards had fewer flowers, the hybrid apple orchards were not affected much.’ Center Chief Atreya says that although there are signs of low yield of local varieties of apples this year, there will be no impact on hybrid apple production.

The weather has also become unfavorable for apple production in the district. When the apple blossoms are blooming, continuous rain and fog have hindered the flowering of apple trees. Early varieties of fruits have already bloomed and set fruit. Although the early varieties are not affected by the rain, the center chief Atreya mentioned that the continuous rain and fog will affect the cultivation of medium varieties of fruits that bloom late.

The apple orchards planted in different places here are flowering late in some places and flowering in others. The center has stated that the rain will not affect the flowering apple trees.

Saroj Tulachan, a farmer from Thasang-1 Tukuche, informed that there are signs of a decrease in production due to very few flowers blooming in the apple orchards here this year. He said, ‘Although local apple trees are affected, there will be no impact on high-density technology-based apple farming.’
