Kanchanpur. Indu Rai of Bhimdutta Municipality-18, Katan, goes to the Mahakali River early in the morning for fishing. His family earns a living by selling fish from Mahakali. Rai has been fishing in the Mahakali River for a decade and a half.
Rai said that he used to carry food with him while fishing. He said that fishing ranges from 5 kg to 10 kg every day. He sells the same fish in local markets like Jhalari, Mahendranagar and Daiji.
“The demand for fresh fish is high,” Rai said. Small fish are sold at Rs 250 per kg and big fish at Rs 300 per kg. His fishing methods are different. He said that he wrapped a cloth in the plate of food and put a hole in the middle and put a lot of flour in it. After entering the fish to eat flour, they catch it and keep it in the pot. He said that it is difficult to set up the net as there are stones in the river.
According to Rai, he earns Rs 30,000 to Rs 35,000 a month by selling fish. He owns a house but no land to cultivate. He said that the income of selling fish meets the needs of food, salt, oil, clothes, medicines and school expenses of children. He goes fishing in groups.
Parbati Chaudhary, who has been fishing along with Rai, said the Mahakali river is the only way to earn a living. She said that all the expenses of the house were met by the income from the sale of fish. “There are fewer fish found in the river as compared to the past,” Chaudhary said. Mahasir, Silar, Raina, Asla, Magri and other species of fish are found in Mahakali.
