Baglung. Waste management in two markets of Baglung has not been completed yet. Dhorpatan Municipality’s Center Burtibang Bazar and Jaimini Municipality’s Center Market have not been able to manage the waste. Burtibang, the second largest commercial hub in the district, is being marketed at a rapid pace, but due to lack of proper waste management, the environment is polluted.

The garbage of Kushmisera, which is being developed as a market in South Baglung, is now being dumped along the road leading to Jaiminidham. Due to this, foul smell has spread in the area. The municipality has not been able to manage it. Passengers are facing problems due to the foul smell of garbage. The waste from Burtibang Market is now dumped at Baghkhor in Ward No. 3.

The municipality has been dumping garbage at Baghkhor for the past eight years. The garbage managed by the municipality in Baghkhor has been washed away due to heavy rains and reaches Tamankhola. Tamankhola and Bhujikhola have also been contaminated with the garbage. Both these rivers merge into the Badigad rivulet. The waste has also affected aquatic animals. The garbage disposal site is located near the Burtibang-Tamankhola road. The ‘dumping site’ on the side of the road has caused problems to the passengers. Hundreds of passengers commute on the road every day.

Tej Bahadur BK, a local, said that it would be difficult to travel on the road due to smoke as the municipality collects garbage near the river and sets it on fire every day. He said that during the summer, the garbage gets rotten and smells far away. BK said that the risk of cholera spread has increased due to lack of proper waste management in this place.

Chief Administrative Officer of Dhorpatan Municipality Chiranjibi Ghimire said that they have started searching for land for waste management. Stating that garbage has been dumped here for years, he said that the dumping side would be constructed in collaboration with the New City Project. Stating that the federal government has allocated Rs 8.7 million for waste management, he said that the waste will be removed from the existing place as soon as the land is managed.

There is a problem of land for waste management in Kushmisera. Deputy Mayor Harihar Sharma said the waste management has been delayed as the municipality has been searching for land. According to him, around 100 ropanis of land is required for industrial village and 15 ropanis of land for garbage. Deputy Mayor Sharma said that waste management would be done as soon as the land for both the structures is acquired.

Deputy Mayor Sharma said, “We are serious about managing the waste, there is a problem due to lack of sufficient land in the narrow areas, although the land has not been found in some places, it has not reached as per the need, although we are taking initiatives to see and get the land in different places. ’
